With Barack Obama’s inauguration and the anger over Pastor Rick Warren being chosen to give a prayer, I thought it would be interesting to go back and read the first inaugural address by George Washington. This is especially true in light of those who argue that religious prayers and the like should not be a part of a secular event. Ha, clearly, they have not read the first inaugural address. In fact, while reading it, I was struck by how easily the address could have been given in a church and nearly passed off as a sermon. I mean, wow! You can read a full article on this here, but below are some quotes. Also, if you take the time to read the article, you will also find out (with historical evidence) that immediately following the address, “The President, the Vice-President, the Senate, and House of Representatives, &c., then proceeded to St. Paul’s Chapel, where Divine Service was performed by the chaplain of Congress.” They got up and went to church — all of them!
Excerpts from Washington’s Address:
Such being the impressions under which I have – in obedience to the public summons – repaired to [arrived at] the present station, it would be peculiarly improper to omit in this first official act my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being Who rules over the universe, Who presides in the councils of nations, and Whose providential aids can supply every human defect – that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States a government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes.

In tendering this homage [act of worship] to the Great Author of every public and private good, I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not less than my own, nor those of my fellow-citizens at large less than either. No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States.

…since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious [favorable] smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.
Sure seemed awfully full of religious speak to me. What happened to separation of church and state George?
