Atheists often argue that Christians simply believe what they do because it gives them a false hope of an afterlife, which makes the Christian feel better about seeing their families again.
Two problems:
(1) It is fallacious. Even if that is the Christian’s motivation, it proves nothing about the truthfulness of the Christian religion. Explaining why someone believes something does not prove whether or not that something is false, even if the reasons the person believes it are false.
(2) For me and many Christians, heaven was not a motivation at all while we were unsaved. It was much more attractive for me as an unbeliever to believe in no God as it meant that I could continue in sin.
